- The Making of a Cook by Madeleine Kamman: A GREAT resource if you want to learn techniques/"how to" in conjunction with recipes.
- The Apprentice by Jacques Pepin: A classically-trained French chef becomes an American culinary icon.
- My Life in France by Julia Child: I want to live in France in the middle of the 20th century. Let me know when time travel is possible.
- A Feast Made for Laughter by Craig Claiborne: A fascinating look at the life of a true gourmand, as well as American culture through the 20th century. Complete with cookbook suggestions and recipes.
- Becoming a Chef by Andrew Dornenburg and Karen Page: A good career guide for professional cooks, and an insightful description of the lifestyle for those who are just interested. Also contains recipes and references for further information.
- On Cooking by Sarah R. Labensky and Alan M. Hause: This is the textbook we used in culinary school. It is just that - a textbook - but if you want to learn about food and cooking IN DEPTH, it is an incredible resource.
